Sam took me to his home in the mountains above Boulder. He gave me an ounce of Columbian Gold, then drove me to Denver and dropped me off at my Brother Richard's house. I got a job at a foundry with my brothers, Joe and Manuel. Within a few days, the Littleton police went to my job and arrested me for the charges out of Pueblo. The next day my brother Joe showed up at the jail to bail me out.
Â
On my leisure time I frequented a bar near the house. My nephews used to show up there to join me in having a few beers. One of my nephew's friends, Dave C., was dealing in heroin. I began buying small amounts for my own use from him. He asked if I could help distribute it. I told him that I didn't sell the stuff, only used it. But I would introduce him to people into the drug scene. Here I was, out on bail, trying to hold a job down. I could not afford to get in any trouble. But it happened just the same. One of Dave's dealers was arrested for dealing drugs. I happened to be at her house with Dave and was taken to jail. My bail was revoked for that, and soon after that, my parole.
Â
I was sent back to prison and while there, still had to go to court on the charges in Pueblo. Mike and his friend were there also. They had been arrested with me in Pueblo, but had been released, and now were in prison with me on other charges. I guess that they had told the narcs, back then in '77, that the drugs had been mine. The drugs had been all of ours. But to get out, both of them had ratted on me.
Â
I told Mike, "You know what happens to rats in prison. You and your friend more or less lied to the cops to get out, and left me holding the bag. Now Pueblo wants to put me in prison for the rest of my life. I won't tell anyone what you did in here, but you are going to have to take the rap. All they will do to you is give a year to run concurrent with the sentence you are already doing.
Â
Mike agreed to take the rap in exchange for not throwing a snitch jacket on him. Also, I paid him a couple of hundred dollars. I had to take a polygraph test for the Public Defender, and then another one for the District  Attorney. I passed both of the tests and the charges were dismissed.
