Vato Maldito: My Life of Crime by John "Bubbles" Gallegos, edited by Raoul Vehill, Chapter 3

E-mail Print PDF

In August of 1958, I was arrested for armed robbery of a drugstore along with a friend of mine whose name was Don. I was 19. He was about 6 years older than me. When he learned that I was still in my teens, he tried to persuade me to take the fall and clear him.

I told him that I would ride my own beef. We were given separate trials. After sitting in jail for six months, my case was dismissed because the witnesses against me, two girls I had attended Junior High with who happened to enter the drugstore as Don and I were leaving, would not show up to testify.

Don, my fall partner, was convicted and sentenced to eight to twelve years in prison. There was a third person, our driver, involved in the robbery. He wasn't caught, but was later caught on other robberies for which he wound up in prison. I was his accomplice on those robberies too, but I was not caught.

In those days, nobody ratted on anybody. Hell, I was wrongly accused by the cops of a homicide and knew who committed it, during a robbery, but I kept my mouth shut and was released from jail after a few days. However, I was returned to Buena Vista for a parole violation a few months after I had the above mentioned robbery dismissed.

My parole was just about over, so I called my parole officer one day before I was to be discharged from parole. My parole officer told me over the phone to go to his office and sign the papers releasing me from parole. So I went to his office to do so. He handcuffed me when I got there and he and another parole officer returned me to prison.

The reason which was used to violate my parole was my association with Don 18 months prior to that. It was a low blow, but that was how the law operated in those days.
