Legend #3: Doc Narcolepsy
Already notable as one of the few trained chiropractors on the frontier, John Henry Narcolepsy was never able to conquer the affliction from which his family derived its name. He moved to the Southwest in 1876, in the hopes that Arizona’s proximity to the sun and general brightness would help ease his condition. But as Doc settled into his new practice in Tucson, he made two fateful discoveries: astronomy and medical science.
Armed with this knowledge, Doc made the natural choice and devoted his life from then on to whoring and gambling. In the latter his frequent “spells” would prove both a blessing and a curse. Sure, unconscious makes a great poker face, but it’s dead-dog s#!tty for personal defense. Doc could just as easily wake up behind a pile of chips at the end of an evening as he could wake up penniless, stabbed, and missing a finger. Luckily, his dear friend Sheriff Marshall Lawman always had his back. Doc would later return the favor by sleeping next to Sheriff Lawman at the infamous Siesta at the So-So Corral. He died in 1903, in bed, peacefully and fully awake, so awake that his final words were “My God, I can literally feel the life seeping from my body.”
