There Is No Such thing As Poetry
Poetry doesn't sleep in the crown of my hat
or in my pocket, like a handful of change.
Doesn't hide under my arm in a leather holster
or stay in the back of my shirt, like a tag scratching.
There are only blue jeans too tight to breathe or bend
or shoes that pinch and make blisters of my socks.
Only the marks on my legs from the garter and fishnets
or hourglass corset strings breathing a shallow rhythm.
Poetry doesn't spark in my walls like a hot wire
or grind like toast crumbs into my carpet.
Doesn't slide like a heavy box into my closet
or open like my blinds with the pull of a cord.
There is only the monster that lives beneath my bed
or forgotten houseplants shriveling on a shelf.
Only stuffing removing itself from my couch
or a rusted out Chevy growing weeds in the yard.
Poetry doesn't pool into my garden like clear water
or shine in my eyes like sunlight squinting.
Doesn't curl like a cat into my warm blankets
or follow like a hungry stray with no collar.
There is only soft soil and hard, dusty forced bulbs
or empty dirt packed beneath my nails.
Only broken branches waving in the wind
or a wordless tourist capturing raindrops on film.
Poetry doesn't bleed through my capillaries
or slide up my spine, disc by disc.
Doesn't catch in my throat like cigarette smoke
or twist in my gut like lustful intention.
There is only the translucent scar from my first deep cut
or bile bubbling and screaming into my chest.
Only the tangles my hair picks up in the wind
and the fear of being abandoned by a roadside in the night.
When I Say I Love You
Secrets fall like angry hands.
Strange birds burrow in my gut.
Blue jeans patch holes in my knees.
Tumbleweeds shake in the distance.
Swarms of dogs feed on honeycomb.
My ears shrivel.
Angels slaughter burnt offerings.
The game ends in checkmate.
Fingers find lint in my pocket.
Oil and water make wine.
The cops plant false evidence.
An ostrich buries its feet in the sand.
Dreams obscure the moonlight.
Rainbow paper-whites dust the drive.
Whales scream claws down my back.
The crowd disperses.
Chainey-briar grows in the woodwork.
Empty bottles crash to the floor.
Jungle birds fly in for the weekend.
I choke on principle.
Discontent digs a foxhole.
Fear whistles in the wind.
Hammer meets glass bell.
Symphonies fill my shower drain.
My eyes turn green then blue.
Underpinnings snap.
Desperation opens shop.
Paper dolls pray to Mecca.
Drama drives in the back seat.
A leprechaun catches the bouquet.
The smell of quiet drifts.
Roots dig runnels to the sky.
Staccato rain smiles on my parade.
Sheep count me.
Spring pushes through the cushions.
Kudzu is ripped apart by walls.
A lion stands in the taillights.
Your teeth taste raw.
Succubae drop in unannounced.
Salt candy falls in the dust.
Weapons cower under school desks.
Anger shatters and is swept clean.
My deadbolt bisects a skeleton key.
Fruit rots down my chin.
Joy blinks tears from its tongue.
Trust dances around the ring with memory.
