Bugs wanders under a freeway overpass. A few other homeless people sleep around. But the big highway offers lots of space. Bugs sits and leans against the giant cement column.
Bugs' head falls forward toward his chest as he sleep comes. But a train horn blasts off in the night and wakes him. He almost goes to sleep and gets awakened this way again.
"Who am I? How did I get here?" he asks himself quietly.
He listens to the cars on the freeway. The train horn blows again.
"I'm lost," Bugs says without feeling.
"Relax, you're off your medication."
Bugs looks to the voice. The freaky dog sits next to him.
"Who are you?" Bugs asks.
The mutt looks stung. "Your best friend. You don't remember me?"
"I don't even know my own name, boy."
"I'm Fido. You're Bugs."
Bug looks up, as if trying to remember. The dog watches him, relaxed.
"I'm hungry. Got any money?" Fido asks after a bit.
"Jackalope a finger slide rocket bike hide orchid gutter rag."
Fido leans over and smacks Bugs in the head a few times. "Change channel! Change channel!"
Bugs shuts up.
"Do you got any money? I'm hungry."
"Noop," says the vagrant. "So how'd I end up here, anyway?"
"You're not even gonna buy me a bag of chips and you want answers? Get a load of yourself."
"I thought you were my best friend?"
Fido sighs. "You must've gotten tired of being doped up at the bug house, I guess. You hid your pills under your tongue at med line and spit 'em out. Then you were standing around the dayroom, saw your chance and took it..."
The channel changes:
A guard stands by an open door on a sun drenched afternoon. Bugs watches him as the guard looks off outside. The inmate grabs a fire extinguisher from the wall, creeps up on the guard, bashes him with it, lays him out and grabs his keys. Bugs runs out the door.
Bugs gets into a 10 year old American hatchback, starts it and drives out of the Institution parking lot.
He parks the car down the street from an old small house where clothes hang on the fence and gets out. Bugs simply walks up, takes a pair of pants and shirt, and returns to the car.
"Nobody must've noticed what you did for a little while. All you had to do was ditch the Guard's car and hitchhike to Big Rock," the dog man narrates.
Bugs gets into the car, changes and exits. He leaves the car and walks down the road.
The channel changes:
Bugs shrugs. "If you say so. I don't remember."
"Are you going to go find her?" Fido asks.
"Who?"
Fido looks at him a second. "You really don't remember anything, do you? Because some guys, you know, front, put on an crazy act, you know, to avoid responsibilities."
"You think so? Yeah. I can see how some guys might do that."
"And in your case, what, with all the medieval therapies and medication, if you weren't nuts to begin with, you'd probably be 7 ways wonky by now."
By the time Fido has finished his sentence Bugs has gone back to sleep. The dog looks at the indigent and rolls his eyes. He sits back against the cement wall and relaxes. Soon enough Fido goes to sleep too.
After the imaginary dog has snored for a couple of moments, Bugs opens his eyes. He looks over at him, gets up and tiptoes away.
Jumpcut> Fido wakes with a start and notices immediately that Bugs has split.
"Slippery motherfucker," the dog grumbles.
Fido goes back to sleep.
Bugs goes down the street in the morning toward the music pawn shop and enters.
Inside a Looney Tunes cartoon plays on the small TV high on the wall back behind the counter. Bugs goes directly up to the glass case where the synth sampler waits and stand there till the clerk notices him. The vagrant points at it. The clerk, remembering him and yesterday's demonstration, hesitates, then grabs it.
When he hands it to him, Bugs holds it delicately.
"It's $25. A good deal," the clerk reminds him.
Bugs sets it down on the glass case. He takes his shoe off, pulls the $10, a few $1s and a bunch of change from his sock. The clerk cranes his neck back and raises his eyebrows. He pulls his goatee before he counts the money.
"You got $18.39."
"I'll get the rest. Hold it for me please."
The clerk writes Bugs a ticket and hands it to him. "You betcha."
The customer leaves.

Bugs wanders in the courtyard in front of the Civic Center Transit Station downtown and puts the bite on various people. They all pretty much refuse him.
He goes up to a hip young dude. "Excuse me sir, do you have a transfer or dollar you can help me with so I can get on the train?" Bugs requests.
The dude gives him a buck. Bugs smiles and thanks him and he nods back.
A big female transit cop sees the exchange. Bugs hurries off.
"Wait a minute!" she runs faster.
Bugs turns and smiles.
"I'm going to write you a citation, Sir." She pulls out a ticket book. "Let me see some ID."
Bugs grins. "Today is the first day of the rest of your life."
"What?"
"Pickle money that sit kitty litter pop apocalypse."
The cop looks at him confused, and then acquires an expression of realization. She finishes writing the ticket and hands it to him.
Bugs, still smiling, rips it in half and throws it on the ground. "Thanks for nothing, Dad!" He walks away.
She takes a couple of quick steps after him, stops, breathes deep and shakes her head. He's gone.
Bugs enters the Music Pawn Shop. He goes to the glass case and gives the clerk the ticket, some $1s and a bunch of change. After counting the cash he gives Bugs a receipt and the toy synth/sampler. After they thank each other the indigent exits.
