Cassandra was a Trojan princess given the gift of prophesy by the god, Apollo. Because she refused to be his, Apollo cursed her so that no one would ever believe her prophesies. During the fall of Troy, she was raped and then taken to be a mistress of King Agamemnon. Later, they were both murdered by his wife, Queen Clytemnestra.
1
A god, a statue came alive in the palm of my hand. Tell me everything, he said and I strummed the harp because my tongue refused to vibrate with voice. The
strings snapped as I plucked them. Entire scales were destroyed. The god placed pointed sticks in his ears. He drowned his own children. Soon, even the frame itself disintegrated between my hands. The ash burned through my flesh and scarred my knees. He pulled my ribs out and gave me glass ones.
2
I saw... everything. The fall of my kingdom. The wretched figures of my brother and father being dragged through the dirt. I prayed at the god's feet and he froze leaves at a whim, broke them over my eyes and pierced my pupils with the shards. You will see everything, he said and tried to steal a piece of flesh from the small of my back. I pushed his hands away. He held onto the smallest square and placed it onto his tongue. No one will listen, he said and swallowed.
3
A soldier rolled me into a piece of thread and devoured me. I wrapped around his teeth but he pulled, forcing me on. You will be mortally blessed, he said and I swallowed snakes. I cried the venom out. It beaded up and solidified. Poison pearls. The god came down and cut my tail with an ax. He fed the appendage to five thousand hungry beasts and still had plenty left over. The meat was pureed. The soldier forcefed me with his genitals.
4
I screamed and the god spat in my mouth. He tasted of sauerkraut and carrots, minced onions and a dice of chicory. My face burned. I dreamd of a mother carrying an ax. She had no hair. A fishing net grew from the top of her scalp. Repeatedly, she hung her wrists at me, cracked a whip of solid metal. The center of my forehead was in place of her eyes. Look at what you've made me do, the god said and showed me the nails piercing his dirty palms.
5
I thought that I should cut out my own tongue and held the muscle between my thumb and forefinger. I maneuvered a knife against the back of my mouth and tried to cut. The god laughed. It will still flap and sing, he said and sewed the cuts closed. A mortal man caught me. He bit into my feet, severing them from my ankles. I clawed at the god but my hands slipped through. I have promised you to another, he said and guided the man towards me.
6
Apollo and his dark light, his damning music. He rode the Trojan horse bareback and pretended the splinters hurt. The men locked me in a glass cage and let strangers in to look. They came with their pants down. I struck the glass with my fists but the walls were thick. The men masturbated over the box and dirtied the sides. My vision became limited to white and white-yellow. I rubbed my side of things but nothing got cleaner.
7
The mother held me with two fingers and slipped the ax into my hair. I will adorn you in red, she said and braided the blade into my locks. My scalp opened and bled. She pulled the halves apart and peeled away the membranes beneath. I am looking for something, she explained and gasped. A hand came out of my brain and held her wrist. Its flesh was bright gold. Will you take Cassandra's hand, the appendage asked. I will, the mother said and ripped the ax from my hair.
8
I collected water in the palm of my hand and showed it to the man. He stripped naked while singing and stepped inside. I could not close my eyes. The mother smacked at the water with her ax. She threw her nets. My wrists were heavy. The water turned red. The many pieces of man floated. I shook my hand and dried it of water. The remaining cracks were deep and slick. The man was stuck in some of them. I plucked him free and fed them to the mother,
9
For once, I would have liked to see an expanse of white. Not white body or white hair or white funeral garments but just white. Clean, living white. Instead of fiery kingdoms and butchered monarchs, my own quartered body. Apollo said, Cassandra, be mine and I secured an iron belt around my genitals not even he could pry open. Others will hurt you, he said and I swallowed the keys. They were silver keys. I would take silver if I couldn't have white.
10
The mother beckoned to me and I closed my eyes, walked blindly to her. I knew every stroke she would take and turned my body into them. One blade across the right breast, a stroke just above the navel. I barely felt anything. The man lay in a corner, his butchered meat pale against the surrounding blood. It was all because of him, the mother said and guided the ax against the small of my back. I fell forward. Apollo lifted me up. He turned me until I was blind.
